A mixture of soft and hard maples, antique reclaimed maple is a difficult to find wood in exterior applications (our source for antique reclaimed woods) due to its lack of resistance to insects. Maple is creamy white with fine brown lines marking the growth rings on plain sawn surfaces. It is usually straight grained but often curly or wavy with an even, fine and lustrous texture that finishes smooth. Like chestnut and elm, antique maple can be wormy and has more depth and character than new maple. Maple is the wood of choice for any application where flooring will take high traffic. Take a look down the next time you happen to be at a bowling alley and hard maple is what you will see. If it can survive bowling balls and dancing shoes, it is a perfect choice for children and large dogs.
